In our complex, culturally pluralistic, and increasingly violent society a need presents for both the expansion and rethinking of traditional African ancestried approaches to childrearing within the context of historical injustices. If we wish to produce empathic, resilient children fluent in capacious thinking and intra/intercommunity cooperation, then, we must rear them in ever-connecting relationships of dignity. And child welfare professionals charged with assisting struggling families need to work within culturally humble models to understand how intersecting socio-historic inequities inform parenting decision-making.
