Understanding trauma’s impact on behavior and learning is crucial for supporting the development of marginalized youth. Young people with unhealed childhood trauma can be preserved as disruptive, defiant and noncompliant. This misinformed interpretation of the child’s behavior often results in traditional punitive approaches to discipline and subsequently re-traumatizing the child. Relevant videos will be viewed and discussed to deepen awareness about trauma buffering, regulation activities and resilience development. Youth Transforming Justice has helped schools transition from punitive discipline to trauma responsive strength based restorative discipline.
