Returnable Girl is a memoir-style story of the challenges of a young adult who has lost trust in parental figures while trying to find her own identity. She has been “returned” from foster care, kinship and group home care by the time she is 13 years old. It appears autobiographical through her eyes addressing subjects of parental neglect and abandonment; separation from siblings; fitting in w/peers, friendship and trust. The book does identify a trauma-informed approach of parenting and other adult/youth relationships. Objectives: • Explore your own experiences with the goal of becoming a caregiver for a young adult. • Use this format to interact with other caregivers to highlight and share your skills and share resources. • How to identify the struggles that teens/young adults experience learning to navigate peer relationships/peer pressure and conformity. • How to support resource parents and caregivers for this age group to understand and acknowledge self-awareness of the differences in from parenting younger children. •Discussion re: your understanding the challenges of parenting traumatized youth especially recognizing your own trauma as the characters in the story have.
