Over the last 50 years the visibility of biracial and multiracial people has exploded in studies and popular culture making the multiracial experience much more visible, but not necessarily better understood. According to research, in just 10 years, there has been a 50% increase of people identifying as multiracial with 4.2 million multiracial children today – the fastest growing group of youth in the U.S. As the youth in our communities grow up with these evermore complex racial identities, it is important that we engage in conversation about what educators and providers need to know in order to support them.
This workshop provides context and statistical findings to better understand the complexities of biracial and multiracial identities, including strengths and struggles that may be common in this population. We will address aspects of the biracial/multiracial experience at the four levels: personal, interpersonal, institutional and cultural. We will discuss the cycle of socialization and how it plays out for multi-racial people in child welfare and how this can affect their sense of self, positively or negatively. We hope to provide participants with knowledge and tools to understand and support system-involved multi-racial youth and families.
