This training orients participants to the child welfare systems in the United States, and the pathways that bring children/youth to foster care or adoption. The training covers issues related to child maltreatment. Child welfare services, foster care placement and various permanency options. This training serves as an overview for caregivers, child welfare professionals, and service providers to understand how the child welfare system operates in the United States and how it responds to vulnerable children and families, and ways that children in the Bay Area, and specifically Alameda County enter the system. Participants will become acquainted with the following concepts: child maltreatment reporting requirements and responses, differential response, child welfare services, judicial roles, out-of-home care, characteristics of children served, current trends and issues, and current policy directions.
