Working with young people can bring up many challenges that ask us to call on all the resources we have, especially working in the child welfare system. We are faced with a wide range of circumstances that can leave us feeling small, powerless, and defeated. It is likely the young people we are working with feel similar emotions as well, with the added pressure of being young in a system and society designed to disempower, dehumanize, and disregard young people. Adultism is one system of oppression that all of us have experienced, whether we realize it or not. Working within an institution designed as part of an oppressive system can be difficult for all of us. What can we do to create change? To be truly successful in our social justice work, we must understand the impacts of and work to decolonize internalized patterns of ageism/adultism. Until we do so, we will continue to unknowingly oppress the youth we support. In this day-long workshop, participants will have a supported space to notice, name, and unpack their oppressive socialization with a focus on adultism. Together we will examine what this looks like in our personal and professional lives as well as begin to consider actions we can take on personal, cultural, and institutional levels to create more equitable organizations, institutions, and communities that keep the young people we are working to support and their needs at the center of our minds.
