As our social and political climate has evolved in recent years, trans and nonbinary people of all ages have experienced a wave of increased anti-trans legislation and higher rates of violence of all kinds: ‘transgender and gender non-conforming people face multiple forms of stigma, which results in lower access to status, power, and resources, and higher risk of discrimination, including in employment, healthcare, and housing. Together, this contributes to higher risk of poverty and homelessness/housing insecurity, social isolation, and worse physical and mental health outcomes, which in turn results in increased risk for violence,’ according to HRC’s 2022 report. Our current moment is calling on all of us to be better allies to the trans and nonbinary people in our lives, work, and communities. How can we work to cocreate environments that are inclusive, welcoming, and affirming for the youth we serve and for each other?
In this interactive workshop, we will introduce fundamental concepts and vocabulary necessary to engage in discourse and provide meaningful support to youth with marginalized gender identities. Participants will be introduced to the cycle of oppression and begin to examine the ways in which we have been socialized into systems of oppression with a focus on cisgenderism. Attendees will also consider actions that we can take on personal, cultural, and institutional levels to create more equitable relationships, institutions, and communities for trans and gender non-conforming individuals.
