This experiential workshop will provide an introduction to the therapeutic power of using play therapy when treating kids in foster care or the juvenile justice system. Play Therapy is a powerful, evidence-based, and child-friendly approach to the treatment of children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and/or loss. This workshop is appropriate for licensed and pre-licensed therapists who would like to begin treating system-involved children or become more proficient in the treatment of this population. We will examine play and its usefulness in therapy with children in foster care, explore what a child’s play can reveal about their struggles, discuss the various types of play therapy and how they are used, explore several play therapy interventions appropriate for children & adolescents, and include ideas for virtual sessions with children.
