A sense of community, belonging, and relational connections have been found to be key factors in mitigating the impact of secondary trauma on providers. Secondary trauma exposure often leads to isolation, withdrawing from family and social connections, and a sense of being alone. In this training, providers will learn about the importance of maintaining relational connections as a buffer to secondary trauma and find ways to feel a part of a community through experiential activities. The healing power of community and connection will then also be applied to supporting youth in care, as this is a primary obstacle for many of our foster youth as they are often removed from their communities of origin and connections and have this experience again and again as they move through placement.
