In this two hour presentation you will learn about the wide “ripple effect” that happens when a disclosure of Childhood Sexual Abuse is disclosed. We will of course discuss the emotionally disruptive effect on the child’s own household. Importantly though, a wide and deep swath of a family’s extended family – that is, their support system of friends, caregivers, relatives and community organization – are often not only also affected by the disclosure of abuse, but in turn can have a profound effect on the child who has disclosed abuse and his or her immediate family. We will review those dynamics that come into play, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. We’ll also look at some of the ways to anticipate the negative reactions, which often lead to the need for out of home care and, through discussion and vignettes, consider how to encourage and facilitate more positive and helpful reactions.
