Day in, day out, struggling to function while constantly presented with heart wrenching, emotional & behavioral challenges can take its toll on professionals working with young children. This leaves professionals at risk for compassion fatigue, a natural consequence of stress resulting from caring for and helping vulnerable, traumatized or suffering young children. Compassion fatigue can result in a loss of one’s ability to feel empathy for the young children they work with, their loved ones and co-workers. This presentation will focus on the toll that working with children can take on the professionals who work with them. The training will differentiate the symptoms of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout. Participants will explore steps towards wellness that include: taking stock of their current stressors; self-care and a work-life balance; resiliency skills; and a commitment to change.
