With the increase of Covid-19 in California, and a statewide shelter-in-place order, entire communities have experienced disruption. In the context of younger foster youth needs, these changes have resulted in changing practices in addressing the needs of foster youth who are entering the child welfare system or transitioning placement. This training reviews some of the service approach considerations who work with young and school-age children who have entered the foster care system through Alameda County Social Services. Special discussion focuses on developmental considerations during the pandemic, establishing remote relationships with young children and families, longer-term engagement of foster youth with history of attachment disruptions, engaging resource families and treatment teams as collaborators, and uses interactive training methodologies to discuss creative approaches for engagement.
