Building on what we’ve learned in previous sessions, we will continue to examine how interlocking systems of oppression function in the everyday actions of ourselves, our colleagues, and the communities we serve. We will explore what interdependent community means, what pieces of our socialization may get in the way of creating and supporting true community, and how we can begin to interrupt oppressive behaviors from the positions we hold, particularly those in which we also hold social power. When we can begin to understand our socialization into systems of oppression, we can more clearly identify and enact support for clients in child welfare, colleagues, and others we care about.

In this day-long workshop, participants will be invited to reflect on opportunities they’ve had to engage in allyship and encouraged to explore additional ways they can act as allies in their work as child welfare professionals and communities. Attendees will also be provided with tools for allyship in action, including skills to leverage identity privilege in support of colleagues, clients, and families across social identities (including but not limited to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability).
