There is a lot of stigma surrounding the use of medication in relationship to mental wellness and sometimes the discussion can feel taboo to families. Even mentioning medication can cause anxiety within the family and within the youth in care, leading to a refusal or aversion from the help that medication can provide. In this class you will learn what mental wellness issues that youth might struggle with could be treated with medication, how to support our youth through the referral process and options, which types of medication are used for which diagnoses, what benefit and risk there are with different medication, how to know when side effects need to be reported to medication prescribers. The purpose of this training is to give professionals who work with youth and families a solid background in how to support system involved youth in medication compliance, how to talk to care givers about compliance and other concerns related to psychotropic medication and how to help care givers and youth make the most out of their appointments with their medication prescribers. The aim is to be able to facilitate conversations about medication with youth and families while reducing anxiety and educating the youth and family to help them make the best decision for themselves.
