Training Summary: Though gender expansive identity has long existed, many are becoming more aware of the developing framework and language utilized to support deep, collective understanding and support. As practitioners and caregivers, we can embrace gender inclusive thinking in partnership with the youth and families we serve. We can confront and disrupt our own socialized gender assumptions and biases while moving away from the binary mindset that perpetuates harmful systems of engagement and power. This interactive workshop will introduce and reinforce evolving language regarding gender and sexuality and explore theory and structures of gender health and congruence. The attendees will spend time in whole group dialogue, small group or partner reflection in breakout rooms, and personal processing through journal prompts. Participants will be given specific tools and a glossary as well as an additional online resource (Padlet) to share contact information, resources, and other helpful information shared during the session. Participants will be able to: – Develop awareness of and utilize language, theory, and frameworks pertaining to gender identity and gender health. – Explore and examine the role of socialization in creating gender-based assumptions and biases. – Appreciate and address the complexities of the experiences of trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth through culturally responsive pedagogies. – Analyze methods to interrupt behaviors, practices, and policies that exclude and ultimately oppress trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth in the child welfare system.
