This workshop is for professionals working with children at risk for suicide. It covers suicide statistics, trauma, and theory with an emphasis on Thomas Joiner’s model: The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide. Risk factors, warning signs and protective factors will be reviewed for both children and adolescents. Participants will understand how precepting events, risk factors, and warnings signs come together to create suicide risk, learn how to conduct a suicide risk assessment and complete safety plans. The goal of this workshop is to increase the provider’s comfort in discussing suicide with children, adolescents and their parents or other caregivers and to better assess the suicide risk that a child or adolescent may have.
