Just the memory of that time when someone made that racist, sexist, or heterosexist comment can make our blood boil. Maybe we responded with a witty quip that helped the offender see the error of their ways. Maybe our response was to attack them by calling them a racist, ignorant, or prejudiced. Perhaps our response was to silence the offender or stay silent ourselves. In reality, none of these responses does much to bring about meaningful change for an individual or for our larger communities. Most of us lack the skill, patience, and practice needed to engage heart-felt conversations that effectively challenge oppression.
