This training will highlight the use of Sandtray techniques as a trauma-informed modality for support, in the continuum of care, when working with children and families who have experienced trauma. This includes a sequence of components that: (1) follows the tri-phasic model of trauma recovery (Herman, 1992); (2) underscores the neurobiology of trauma; and (3) complements current evidence-based approaches in the field of trauma. For each component, the training will describe both a specific goal and accompanying strategies. The client’s engagement in Sandtray and/or the metaphorical use of Sandtray materials/miniatures will be demonstrated through care plan examples.

These techniques apply to multicultural populations and are informed by neurosequential models of working with traumatized children, youth, and their families. As such, the techniques augment engagement of many at-risk children and youth who are underserved and are in potentially challenging environments.
