Use of the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) has been adopted system-wide for use in child welfare services, probation, and behavioral health to support foster youth. However, providers can often see the CANS as a measure for compliance as opposed to a tool for transformation. The philosophy underlying the CANS–Transformational Collaborative Outcomes Management (TCOM)–exists as a practice framework to remind that the values underlying the CANS tool fosters communication and collaboration, and communication. This training provides a review of the TCOM principles and how these can be used to guide communication with youth and families.
