Everyone is impacted by the system of racism, and therefore has to tenaciously walk against that system. Whites and people of color are both impacted by structural racism, though the costs and consequences are significantly different, and our awareness of the system usually also differs greatly. There has been much debate about the issue of race neutrality recently, with some calling for the elimination of race-conscious policies in favor of race-neutral policies. Because Whiteness can often go unseen or unexamined, there are ways in which Whiteness impacts the development and implementation of policies, procedures, etc. that can reinforce discrimination. This training will review the impact of (seemingly) race-neutral policies on youth in foster care and strategies for addressing inequities that result from these policies.
