Hearing the word privileged or being confronted with what it means and the fact that we have it can cause us to experience feelings of guilt, embarrassment, denial, and/or shame. Most of us do not want the systems of oppression we live under to exist at all, or to benefit from them at the expense of others. Most of us, however, do have privilege in at least one area or identity. For all of us, but especially if we experience privilege in one area but oppression in other identities, it can be difficult to recognize our privilege and feel empowered to know what we can do to act as allies and create change from where we are. How can we leverage our privilege to create the changes we want to see in our workplaces and in the world? In this day-long workshop, participants will have a supported space to notice, name, and unpack their socialization into systems of oppression, focusing on privilege. We will examine what privilege means, what it might look like around any singular identity, and how privilege moves to shape our experience of our world on an individual, interpersonal, and cultural level. Together we will examine what privilege looks like in our personal and professional lives as well as begin to consider what it looks like to leverage our privilege, share power, remain curious, collaborate on decisions, and take action to create more equitable thriving communities where all of us have more space and safety to bring our brilliance, personalities, and whole selves.
