This 6-hour course will focus on assessing a system’s readiness to provide client-centered services, the identification of a system’s motivation points, and the use of O.A.R.S (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries) and values work to elicit/enhance system readiness. The course will begin with an examination of the common systems with which clients need to engage and the establishment of prevalent system motivation types. Systems include, but are not limited to, family, school, work, mental health and medical programs, probation/parole, and child welfare. Participants will practice assessing system readiness utilizing Prochaska and DiClemente’s Stages of Change and the identification of sustain and change talk. Participants will learn the basics of Motivational Interviewing and how to apply these skills when interacting with reluctant system players. The workshop will culminate with multiple breakout sessions in which participants will practice the use of O.A.R.S to increase system readiness/client access to quality care.
