Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is at the forefront of the majority of evidence-based protocols for a variety of youth mental health problems and across youth and family populations, including in child welfare and juvenile justice contexts. Understanding the foundational core components as well as benefits of CBT helps providers to utilize cognitive-behavioral modalities across problem areas/targets and formats. By having both a solid understanding of introductory CBT information and implementing general Cognitive-behavioral process strategies (e.g., Socratic questioning) providers can better improve outcomes for youth in foster care and juvenile justice systems. In addition, research demonstrates that there are practices that occur most frequently within evidence-based treatments for specific targets, as well as across them. Part of utilizing a CBT framework effectively includes being familiar with the common elements and the decision models that inform the implementation and sustainment of the common elements; which will improve service outcomes.
