When we are faced with and witness bias, discrimination, and oppression, it is common to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do. Often, we recognize the racism, sexism, heterosexism, and/or other oppression but become frozen in the gap between knowing what we are seeing and knowing what to do to create effective positive change. Further, we often unaware of our own implicit bias and are only made aware when others recognize and point out what we have done. It is common to feel overwhelmed here, too, and to have defensive reactions that typically do not bring about the changes we hope to make that are in alignment with our beliefs and values.
