While social media can be utilized to help youth connect with each other, it can also have a negative impact on their mental health. Social media can be addictive, releasing dopamine in the brain’s “reward center”. This course will begin by exploring healthy use of social media. The course will cover mental health concerns including depression and anxiety, body image, sleep quality, disordered eating, low self-esteem, and peer pressure. Folks will learn about cyberbullying as well as cyberbullying prevention. The impact of social media on the brain will be explored.
