Racism and anti-blackness have permeated every aspect of our society since the founding of our nation. We have seen movements make progress in the fight against racism and anti-blackness: people donate money to fight anti-blackness. People take to the streets to protest anti-asianness. People are calling for a change in immigration legislation. Despite all these important steps, money, protests, and legislation have not and will not rid our societies of the racism that lives within each of us. System-involved youth and families are hugely and disproportionately impacted by systems of oppression. How can we as child welfare professionals and community members make significant change? Until we are open to reflection on how we have been socialized into upholding racism, we will not be able to liberate ourselves and generations to come from the impacts of white supremacy. This day-long workshop will provide attendees with language, historical knowledge, and a safe space for guided examination of our socialization around racism. Attendees will be supported in considering ways to unlearn racist patterns in order to develop interdependent connection and community within and beyond the construction of race to benefit the system-involved youth and families they serve. We will also imagine possibilities for ourselves and our communities outside of a racist model and begin to consider tools for change.
