Young people are often disrespected and mistreated just because for being young. For the most part, laws and policies ignore the needs of these citizens. And young citizens can’t challenge the laws and policies by which they must abide. Youth in general, and especially those involved in the child welfare system, are more controlled than any other group in society perhaps second only to prisoners. Most are told what to eat and wear, when to sleep and wake, when to talk and listen, where to go and not go, who to befriend and avoid, and when to be inside the home or out. In addition, adults in the position of guardianship are granted permission to punish, take away “privileges” and property, ostracize, and speak (down) to young people in ways that they would never speak to another adult.

Most of you choose this work because you care about young people. And in this work, we all strive to support youth and make meaningful change around racism, classism, and other oppressions. However, to be truly successful in our work, we also have to understand and work to deconstruct internalized patterns of ageism/adultism. Until we do so, we will unwittingly act out this socialization on the youth we support.
