Youth in foster care encounter systems, providers, and social workers who may occupy different cultural values and beliefs. When placed with non-familial care, youth may find that the identity, values, and beliefs of those around them are notably different from those with which they were brought up. This training reviews how culturally-relevant conversations, including cross-cultural conversations may happen in the context of serving youth. Participants practice discussing chosen elements of identity, including race, and how this experience is felt when in dialogue with someone of the same race, contrasted with someone of a different race. Participants also review common culturally-themed scenarios and dilemmas and review strategies for responding.
