Engaging youth in foster care can at times be difficult, particularly when youth are quiet or when they don’t wish to communicate verbally with those in their family or the system. This training will explore how to understand children’s drawings as a form of communication that youth may use with grownups. We will view drawings of foster children, children who have experienced trauma, and children of varied cultural backgrounds in order to highlight the importance of including contextual elements, thus seeing more deeply into children’s subjective experience. We present drawings from a research sample of US & international cases of foster children and facilitate discussion of cultural characteristics.
