In the United States alone, at least 1.3 to 1.4 million youth under the age of 18 years old are providing care for a family member (Hunt, Levine, and Naiditch, 2005). In this presentation you will learn about the children and adolescents who take care of or support in some capacity a family member with a health condition, illness, disability, mental health challenges, or other circumstance in which family members have care needs. Some of the reasons why youth provide care or support to a family member will be discussed and the tasks that youth may perform in their caregiving role will be shown.

This presentation will dedicate a fair amount of time to exploring the different effects caregiving can have on children and adolescents, as discovered in research around the world. Some of the areas impacted by caregiving in youth include their educational experiences, mental health, social relationships, physical health, and transition into adulthood. Additionally, research has demonstrated some positive effects and benefits of caregiving for youth, which will also be explored. While some effects of caregiving have more research and empirical evidence than others, this presentation aims to give a responsible introduction to what research is showing, and more in-depth explorations of empirical evidence will be beyond the scope of this presentation.

Lastly, we will explore some of the ways different countries have responded to the needs of caregiving youth and their families, as well as discuss the clinical interventions and supportive practices by professionals that have been identified in research to be helpful in supporting caregiving youth and their families.
