In today’s polarized climate, conversations about current events can quickly become challenging, especially when they involve complex issues of oppression and conflict. This workshop aims to equip participants with the skills and strategies needed to engage in meaningful and productive dialogue. By focusing on key themes such as listening to understand, building empathy, fostering dialogue across differences, and embracing non-closure, participants will learn how to approach sensitive topics with confidence and care. The workshop will delve into current events that are generating significant public debate, including the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, racial justice and police reform, and immigration policies and border security. Through a combination of historical context and socio-political analysis, participants will gain a deeper understanding of these issues and their broader implications. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of active listening, empathy, and the willingness to engage in dialogue without necessarily reaching closure, allowing for more nuanced and respectful conversations. In this interactive workshop, attendees will be equipped with practical tools to foster understanding and promote constructive dialogue in their personal and professional lives. This course aims to create safe and inclusive spaces for discussing sensitive topics, ultimately contributing to a more informed and empathetic community.
