With the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the mass protests that have followed, and the lack of commitment from our highest levels of government to address acts of hatred, there is increasing recognition nationwide of systemic racism within and outside the criminal justice system that demands immediate attention and decisive action. As has always been the case and with ever increasing urgency, it is imperative within our field that white staff bring a high level of awareness to act as anti-racist allies and accomplices, with high levels of cultural responsiveness and humility. Integrating culturally based knowledge, techniques and activities into one’s practice and agency programming, without it being insensitive or an appropriation, is an ability that requires on-going development.
