Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is at the forefront of the majority of evidence-based protocols for a variety of youth mental health problems and across youth and family populations, including in child welfare and juvenile justice contexts Understanding the core components of CBT helps clinicians to utilize cognitive-behavioral modalities across problem areas/targets and formats. Cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization, treatment ‘non-specifics,’ and general process strategies (e.g., Socratic questioning) are critical features in implementing any CBT protocol effectively. In addition, research demonstrates that there are practices that occur most frequently within evidence-based treatments for specific targets, as well as across them. Part of utilizing a CBT framework effectively includes being familiar with the common elements and the decision models that inform the implementation and sustainment of the common elements.
