Many foster youth experience various forms of complex trauma, which leaves a lasting impact on the child. In the face of trauma, mental health professionals might begin to feel overwhelmed with the trauma and may not always be aware of appropriate ways to engage youth who have experienced trauma. This last installment of a 4-part series considers what recovery can look like for youth using the framework of “”regulate, relate, and reason””. We will consider creative approaches to use in order to break the negative cycle of trauma and to instill hope and healing into youth. We will additionally consider the importance of resilience in trauma-work and consider the last trauma-informed principle of resilience and recovery. We will consider how to utilize self-care and community healing as means to disrupt traumatized systems.
