Depression and anxiety are on the rise for kids and teens everywhere. At the same time, children and teens in the child welfare system face distinct challenges, and need specialized kinds of support to stay calm and hopeful as they navigate life. This workshop is designed to help people who care for, and provide services to, youth in the child welfare system. The training will help participants identify symptoms of anxiety and depression in children and teens. We will discuss the ways that the experience of trauma, lost relationships, constant changes, and ongoing “unknowns” can contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression, and perhaps lead to suicidal ideation. It is important that participants understand that there is no way to perfectly predict suicidal behavior. However, this workshop will review warning signs that a youth may be feeling anxious, depressed, and/or suicidal. We will discuss the key components of a thorough suicidality assessment. We will practice concrete ways for caregivers, program staff, and mental health staff to talk to youth, and ask them sensitively about suicidal thoughts. Importantly, we will discuss how to know when to refer for additional assessment and therapeutic support.
