Foster Care Training

Amid ongoing protests, calls for racial justice, and demands to dismantle oppressive systems, folks working in the social welfare field are increasingly aware of the roles they play in either upholding or challenging these structures. We want to help, but many of us operate within systems designed to maintain the status quo of power and privilege. This moment calls for a radical rethinking of how we approach care work, ensuring that we are working towards liberation rather than reinforcing the very structures we aim to change. This workshop offers an opportunity to examine the dynamics of power, privilege, and oppression within the child welfare system. By looking through a liberation lens, participants will critically reflect on their own roles and biases within these systems and learn how to actively resist them. The session will explore practical strategies for youth workers to reimagine their practice in a way that centers social justice, equity, and anti-oppression. Through this reimagining, social workers will leave equipped to transform their daily work to better serve youth, families, and communities impacted by systemic inequity.
