“We focus this course on understanding the ways we have internalized ableism in our daily lives. Sayings like, “”That’s so dumb!”” or “”Your words are falling on deaf ears”” that were seemingly “”harmless”” land a lot differently today. Cultural shifts in our awareness along with the phenomenon of social media allows people to access diverse perspectives, connect with non-school related learning opportunities, and make connections instantly through time and space. In this workshop, we will examine how ableism has existed and evolved and learn from the work of disabled people who are disability justice advocates. We will spend time in dialogue exploring terminology, shared language, definitions, and identifying the ways that the Social Model of Disability can help us in our work to break cycles of harm and center care and healing.”
