Working with Latino families? This class will be perfect for you. This class will explore statistics, etiquette, different family values, rituals, religion, and different teaching and learning implications of Latino Families. Discussed will be general family beliefs regarding mental health and disabilities and other important concepts in the Latino culture. What is acculturation and how do we best understand and help Latino families through their process? Working with Latino families requires an understanding of different worldviews that may impact how individuals communicate with professionals as well as their own children, and how these worldviews shape expectations for development. Cultural sensitivity and competence will be addresses and the importance of effective professional and personal boundaries will be reviewed. Clinical terminology and vocabulary relevant to our field with be presented. Participants will be reminded of the importance of their own triggers and how to best have intentional interaction vs. reactions. How do we best manage these and creating awareness for ourselves, as providers, to be truly effective in our roles.
