If toys work like the child’s words and play is the child’s language, then we as providers must learn to understand and communicate with our young clients in this way. In this training, we will explore the use of the metaphor, or fantasy play as a primary tool in work with children. This approach delves deeper than targeting the presenting behavior or symptom into the internal world of the child. Through imaginative play, we learn about the child’s internal working models of relationships –their needs, their anxieties, their experiences of self, others and the world around them. This training requires participants to read two articles prior to meeting that will be provided once the attendance list has been confirmed.
