While some readers may be very experienced foster parents and have already been “through the mill” of having a wide variety of foster children in their home; others of you may be novices as foster parenting and may be wondering what you’re getting yourself in for. In this training we will look at what some of the most typical behaviors and behavior problems are for children in foster care, at the things that you can do in the first weeks and months to make it easier for children to transition into living in your home, and what activities you can engage in with your children that can help them to build healthier attachment behaviors, to learn how to have reciprocal interactions with others, and to be a healthy member of a family. These skills are invaluable for children to have if they’re going to be moved on to an adoptive home (or if they’re going to be adopted by you), or even if they’re going to be returned home for another try with their birth parents. They may be one of the best gifts that you ever give to your foster children. Most of the behaviors that will be discussed in this training are the results from children being traumatized.
