The Presenter will identify a group of young people who might experience the start of school with more mixed emotions. How their educational success is more challenging. Children who, through no fault of their own, cannot live safely at home. And who all too often, do not have the consistent, caring adult presence that can see them through a transition like the start of school. Presenter will discuss how educational outcomes for foster youth read like a list of all the things we don’t want for children; Lower grades, more behavior problems, higher rates of suspension from school, lower high school graduation rates, and very low postsecondary school completion rates. Presenter will encourage participants to think about behavioral issues these kids typically come into foster care with due to abuse and neglect at home and how it would have an impact on them academically.
Objectives:
- Participants will identify key challenges of foster youth and the educational system
- Participants will discuss strategies on how to help foster youth achieve education success. Being appropriate, consistent, caring adults in their lives.
- Participants will reflect and understanding on the difference between a 504 plan verses an IEP. Discuss the impacts of these educational plans and how they support the youth.
