Foster Care Training

Trauma surrounds the care that providers provide for children in care and their families. The children and families have extensive histories of multigenerational and institutional trauma that is reflected in their daily functioning. In addition, many providers have their own histories of trauma. Working with children in care and their families affects the provider and the agency they work in and can lead to an unhealthy environment that is characterized by excessive stress and trauma. By understanding the effects of stress and trauma on the children in care, their families, your colleagues and you and by having tools to address the effects one can foster wellness and resilience.

This training will address these issues in an effort to transform stress and trauma in order to foster wellness and resilience.

1. Participants will be able to recognize 3 types of trauma that impacts helping professionals in their work and personal lives and the clients they serve.
2. Participants will be able to explain at least 2 ways that stress and trauma affects their neurobiology and the neurobiology of the children and family in their care.
3. Participants will be able to implement at least 2 tools/strategies to address vicarious trauma.
4. Participants will be able to articulate and apply the principles of a trauma informed agency. They will be able to utilize the principles to develop their commitment to change.
