Foster Care Training

This continuing education course will teach participants how to assess and intervene effectively with individuals, families, and children impacted by intimate partner violence. We will review the scope and impact of the problem; relevant screening and assessment skills; effective clinical intervention paradigms for adult survivors, perpetrators, and exposed children; vicarious traumatization; and community resources. Significant time will be devoted to examining this problem in disadvantaged and diverse populations.

Training Objectives:

1. Describe the scope and impact of intimate partner violence on individuals and families.
2. Improve ability to screen for intimate partner violence in a variety of settings.
3. Upon detection, improve ability to perform a comprehensive assessment including patterns of perpetration/victimization and levels of dangerousness.
4. Demonstrate the ability to engage, assess, and intervene sensitively and effectively with abusive partners, exposed children, adult survivors.
5. Understand vicarious traumatization and ways to address it.
6. Identify adjunctive resources.
