Foster Care Training

This training will provide a brief history of the DSM, an overview of the DSM 5 structure, primary changes in DSM 5 diagnoses impacting children and youth, differential diagnoses using the DSM 5 based on both symptoms and individual diagnoses, and experience in providing a non axial diagnosis. The training will focus on supporting supervisors in accurately differentiating diagnoses seen in children and youth with complex symptoms including depression, suicidal feelings and behavior, anxiety, anger and aggression, and impulsivity. Participants are encouraged to bring challenging cases for discussing diagnosis with the DSM 5.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify significant developments in the history of the DSM.
2. Identify the structure and primary changes in diagnoses in the DSM 5 impacting children and youth.
3. Use decision trees in making a differential diagnosis in the DSM 5 based on symptoms in children and youth.
4. Identify differential diagnoses for new and frequently used mental disorders in the DSM 5 with children and youth.
5. Develop a non axial diagnosis for children and youth using the DSM
