A client’s desire to end his or her life is one of the most frightening dilemma’s a therapist can face and unfortunately, it is a reality that must be addressed. Suicidal thoughts and intentions are experienced by a variety of clients across age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status during their life span. Therefore, it is beneficial for therapists to know how to assess clients’ desire, ability and need for additional support. This workshop will focus on safety planning protocol – the next steps after confirming that a client is suicidal. It will include the initial safety plan along with how to follow up with a treatment plan that provides ongoing assessment of suicidality. This workshop is informed by Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, a researched based treatment for suicidality and self-harming behaviors.
