Foster Care Training

This course reviews the impact of trauma on youth development including mental health and behavioral consequences. Trauma related disorders are discussed including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, reactive attachment disorder, and disinhibited social engagement disorder. Treatment approaches and evidence based practices for trauma related disorders are provided. Cognitive behavioral interventions and self-regulation skills that support youth in managing trauma are also reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Increased understanding of the impact of trauma on the development of youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
2. Analysis of trauma related disorders in youth including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, reactive attachment, and disinhibited social engagement disorder.
3. Ability to utilize approaches for working with youth who have trauma related disorders including evidence based practices.
4. Cognitive behavioral interventions and self-regulation skills that support youth in managing the impact of trauma.
