The focus of this training is to provide an understanding of the different permanency and guardianship options for children living with family members, grandparents or in the foster care system and to discuss the potential emotional implications around permanency planning for the children and adolescents. This training will give an overview of the current modifications occurring within the foster care system in California and how these changes effect the different permanency options for families. The importance of permanency planning will be discussed, the different options and terms (what it means to apply for guardianship vs being a “resource parent”), the roles of caregivers with these different titles and the emotional implications for children and youth will be presented. Resources for children, youth and caregivers will be discussed.
