Course Description:
The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition) has many significant differences from previous editions, including new diagnoses, changes to previous diagnoses, and a new classification system. The manual also encourages bringing a cultural prospective to diagnoses. Through lecture, video and vignettes this course will explore the new manual and explain how to determine which diagnoses to use for Medi-Cal specialty mental health services.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to help participants:
  • Demonstrate accurate use of the new structure and organization of the DSM-5 to understand and determine diagnoses;
  • Analyze and Identify at least five DSM-5 diagnoses which are covered by Medi-Cal Specialty Mental Health Services:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the regulations of the Department of Health Care Services when utilizing the DSM-5 criteria for diagnoses that are covered by Medi-Cal Specialty Mental Health Services.
  • Identify four new diagnoses and four significant changes to diagnoses.
