During this workshop participants will explore their own understanding of and assumptions related to sex, gender, and gender identity. We will unearth the ways that the binary system of masculine and feminine results in microaggressions toward transgender and gender variant youth. We will also work to develop skills and methodology needed to provide safe spaces for trans and gender variant youth in care, and in workplaces and communities.

Through lecture, activities, personal reflection, observation, dialogue and practice, participants in the workshop will cultivate an understanding of gender oppression and how it impacts trans and gender variant individuals. Attendees will learn basic terminology related to gender and gender oppression. Attendees will also learn and practice dialogue tools and techniques necessary to engage dialogue and action aimed at interrupting gender oppression within the care system, workplaces, and larger communities.
