Learning Grief Communication Skills to Support Youth In Foster Care is an interactive training to help participants identify symptoms, teach communication skills, and practice somatic tools that support youth coping with grief. Participants will examine the complexities of grief and how culture, religion, oppression, age, and experiences within the foster care and/or juvenile justice systems shape how a person may express grief.

Within a safe, confidential, and intentional environment, participants will be invited to gently consider their own understanding of grief and how it has impacted their lives and/or the lives of a loved one. This will be done through writing exercises, somatic activities, role playing, and interactive conversations that includes a restorative justice circle. Based on a person’s experiences with grief including times when they have and haven’t felt supported, the group will assemble a list of potential tools that will create an even safer environment for youth to do the same.
